The December 2001 Bonn Agreement proclaimed the international community's determination to "end the tragic conflict in Afghanistan and promote national reconciliation, lasting peace, stability and respect for human rights in the country." Over a decade later, while access to health care and education has improved, the central government in Kabul remains corrupt and incapable of exerting control over its territory, the Afghan security forces are rife with criminality and internal divisions, and the Afghan Taliban and other insurgent forces still threaten the country. The mission to build an effective Afghan state and eradicate indigenous militants has resulted in a costly, time-intensive, and troop-heavy campaign, even though the United States accomplished the limited goal of incapacitating...

Lets look at the origins of the war and where the conflict is today.. ( 5 minute documentary ) ________ Background to War The war in Afghanistan, ongoing from 2015, refers to the conflict between the afghan military and the islamic extremists. The War officially began a year after US Led forces largely withdrew from the country in 2014. This left the Afghan government and military in charge of security responsibility in the country in the midst of growing Taliban and extremist violence. Notably Nato forces numbering in the tens of thousands remain in the country following a bilateral agreement signed between the afghan government and Nato, this includes some 10 thousand Americans. The background for the current war is directly linked to failed US policy since the US invaded in 2001 and how corruption and mismanagement by US forces led to an ineffective Afghan government and the growth of extremism in many provinces. But we will examine this in a later video, so please like and subscribe to hear more on that. The source for the current war can be tracked back to 2014, when a string of events led to a Taliban resurgence. In Pakistan, efforts by the military to dislodge terrorist organisation in wazirison province led to many Uzbek, Arab and Pakistani militants entering Afghanistan and swelling the Taliban ranks. the withdrawing BY US forces meant that the Taliban were no longer being attacked on a constant basis in the outer provinces of Afghanistan. These two aspects along with a lack of international interest and an ineffective afghan government have led the Taliban growth in strength. These weaknesses have also allowed ISIS to enter into Afghanistan establishing a branch and recruiting fighters since 2015.

The mission to build an effective Afghan state and eradicate indigenous militants has resulted in a costly, time-intensive, and troop-heavy campaign, even though the United States accomplished the limited goal of incapacitating al Qaeda and punishing the Taliban only months after 9/11. What went wrong? In autumn 2001 what could U.S. policymakers have done differently? Years later, in spring 2009, was an Iraq-like surge the right option? Should U.S. officials have ever oriented the mission around grand promises of civilian reconstruction and long-term development assistance? Could the United States have met the limited objective of disrupting al Qaeda without a broader nation-building presence? In the future, if America is attacked and finds itself in a similar situation, how should it meet the threat without getting trapped? The views expressed by Colonel Gentile here do not necessarily represent those of the United States government or the Department of Defense. This interview was recorded shortly after the event, "The War in Afghanistan: What Went Wrong?" at the Cato Institute April 5, 2013. http://www.cato.org/events/war-afghanistan-what-went-wrong Video produced by Caleb O. Brown and Austin Bragg.
